11/8/2023 0 Comments Nintendo wii motion plus![]() ![]() WarioWare is the only Nintendo franchise where the games are actively worse when they AREN'T taking advantage of some weird gimmicky control scheme. Not bad, but not great, as having your character move on a 2D plain was too limiting in the amount of variety you could have, and their different movesets made some microgames feel borderline impossible depending on who you were playing as. I say "somewhat" because it's true that Get It Together was just kind of.okay. It also doesn't help that we already have a WarioWare game on Switch, so that itch has already been scratched somewhat. I've been too distracted by my anticipation for the Mario RPG remakes and Super Mario Wonder. But for some reason, I keep forgetting this game is coming out. I adore WarioWare-in fact, I think it's secretly one of Nintendo's best franchises. To put things into perspective, a new solely motion-based WarioWare has endured a longer wait than that of the infamously (and repeatedly) delayed Duke Nukem Forever! I didn't mean to sound like a wet blanket, as even an underwhelming WarioWare game is better than none at all. Nevertheless, I still wrung nearly 200 hours out of the latter. Gold essentially being a "greatest hits" collection after such a long hiatus (and no stereoscopic 3D), and Get It Together perhaps being better suited for handheld play (and inclusive of Switch Lite users). WarioWare has typically been associated with taking advantage of the gimmicks of the hardware for which the games are designed, hence why I found Gold and Get It Together to be so underwhelming. I would go so far as to say that Smooth Moves outranks Wii Sports in a party environment on the strength of its variety and sense of humour. But with the activities requiring two motion controllers per player this time around, perhaps I can look past the support for fewer players. The marathon + rope cutting game was also a real nail-biter, giving all players a chance of winning (supporting up to 5 players), with stronger players given a slight advantage. Some of the most fun that I've had with Smooth Moves was playing the various multiplayer modes with friends/family, in particular, the 12-player last man standing game, where losing players are gradually eliminated. I'm also a little disappointed that multiplayer is limited to only 4 players. I was also so, so crushed that we never got a new WarioWare game that took advantage of the Wii Motion Plus accessory back in the day (be that on the Wii or Wii U), but it seems that this will (finally) make up for it. ![]() It's hard to believe that it's been almost 17 years since its release! If we have to wait that long for the next motion-based WarioWare, then I'll be in my 50s! sigh Life is so bloody short. Hell, I would have been happy with a barebones port given how long it's been (though it would have been inferior by virtue of omitting the awesome use of sound effects emitted via by the Wii Remote). I've waited what feels like forever for a Smooth Move successor and I'm so bloody excited.
